چکیده

Recent high pressure x-ray experiments show that, contrary to traditional expectations, the NaCl structure is not present in covalent semiconductors, and the diatomic b-Sn structure is absent in all compound semiconductors. We explain these systematic absences in terms of dynamical phonon instabilities of the NaCl and b-Sn crystal structures. Covalent materials in the NaCl structure become dynamically unstable with respect to the transverse acoustic TA[001] phonon, while ionic compounds in the b-Sn structure exhibit phonon instabilities in the longitudinal optical LOf00jg branch. The latter lead to predicted new high pressure phases of octet semiconductors. [S0031-9007(98)08188-5]

Vapor-Pressure Osmometry and Conductivity Determination of Salting-Out Effects in Aqueous Surface-Active Ionic Liquid 1-Dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium Bromide Solutions

Systematic studies on the vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) and conductometric properties of aqueous solutions of model surface-active ionic liquid 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C12mim]Br) are performed in the absence and presence of a large series of electrolytes in order to achieve a deeper understanding about the molecular mechanism behind the specific salt effect on the aggregation be...

Kinetics and mechanism of the reaction of lysine with permanganate ion at different ionic strengths and temperatures

The kinetics of Mn(VII) oxidation of lysine in moderately sulfuric acid solutions was studiedspectrophotometrically in the presence and absence of Mn(II) as catalyst. The reaction was arrangedto be under pseudo first-order condition with respect to Mn(VII). The results showed that the pseudofirst-order rate constant increases with increasing [H2SO4], [(Mn)II], and [lysine]. The dependence ofthe...

Combined Theoretical and in Situ Scattering Strategies for Optimized Discovery and Recovery of High-Pressure Phases: A Case Study of the GaN-Nb2O5 System.

The application of pressure in solid-state synthesis provides a route for the creation of new and exciting materials. However, the onerous nature of high-pressure techniques limits their utility in materials discovery. The systematic search for novel oxynitrides-semiconductors for photocatalytic overall water splitting-is a representative case where quench high-pressure synthesis is useful and ...

Temperature and pressure induced phase transition in IV-VI compounds

2014 The crystal structure of SnS has been investigated as a function of temperature by elastic neutron scattering from 293 K to 1 000 K. SnS undergoes a second order displacive phase transition from the 03B1-phase (B16, Pbnm) to the high temperature 03B2-phase (B33, Cmcm) at 887 K. The mean square displacement of the Sn atom which is isotropic at room temperature becomes increasingly anisotrop...

Covalent bonding and the nature of band gaps in some half-Heusler compounds

Half-Heusler compounds XYZ, also called semi-Heusler compounds, crystallize in the MgAgAs structure, in the space group F 4̄3m. We report a systematic examination of band gaps and the nature (covalent or ionic) of bonding in semiconducting 8and 18electron half-Heusler compounds through first-principles density functional calculations. We find the most appropriate description of these compounds f...
